In geosciences, direct observations of geology are usually only possible in outcrops. If, however, one knows how to interpret the structures visible in the outcrop, an approximate picture of the three-dimensional geological structure can be obtained.

In teaching, we use virtual and augmented reality approaches to teach geoscience students such concepts for deriving three-dimensional structures from two-dimensional sections.
